Does anyone know how to get that #1 spot on a search engine (I speak mainly of google)? I know that search engines grade on:

page content
meta keywords

Anything else?

And, there is sort of myth that seems to be going around that if you put keywords in a div (and hide it from users-- as it is unsightly), it will improve the ranking of the page because the page content counts for more "points" then the key words. Is that true?

Anyway, I'll take any tips on improving search engine scores. Thanks!

The search engines don't work with the META tag anymore.
The look at the content of your site, the links u put in to other sites, the sites with links to yours and the traffic to your site.

So the only way to get up high is to make a good structured site and link to other sites and ask them to link back. That way u start getting your visitors and u steadily work your way to the top.

Use the appropriate tags for the appropriate content...

<h1> ... <h6> for headings in order of importance 1 being high 6 being low.
<p> for paragraphs
<blockquote> for quotes
<div> for alligning
<ul><li> for links
<form> for user input not just <input>

Thanks guys! That's some great stuff. Ok, now the flip side: What should I not do? (what will hurt the ranking?)

Thanks again guys.

best way to gain ranking is to put a lot of content in your site... Content content content !!!!! is the answer.... Repeat the key words you want ranking in google.... insert key words in the following list of elements : title, url, meta desc, meta keywords, content, internal links, h1 and h2... you will see the difference in 2-3 months...

you can track your results at http://google.com/webmasters
