1 gig ram

There is no 10" screen (Unless you get the eee PC... but that doesn't suit you)
The minimum now is 15.4" widescreen.

Macs have nice 12" monitors. The macbooks are really nice, too.
AND!!!! You can run XP on those natively. In fact, it fits every need you mention above.

Except for the "tight budget" part :p

Actually, the macbooks aren't so bad. The pro versions are more expensive.

But with the student discount, you can ge the macbook black, which is a great computer, for about $1,300, I believe.

//shrug-- you get what you pay for.

Remember, macs might be expensive, but I've never heard anyone complain about buying one after they've used it.

I agree with this except the OP states:

...not on a tight budget...

OH, heh, that's what I get for reading too fast.

But you can get almost twice the computer with a PC for less than 1300 of the macbook.

I have used them all, not starting a war, to each his own and all that, but I haven't seen a mac product that can touch my PC and I still have (after 4 years with it) yet to break 1000 bucks on it. (internal product wise, we don't count software and childrens games)

well if u just want a dependable pc then go for the mac with vista.(i love vista)
