Windows or Linux hosting?

Oh, boy, here goes the blond....I am looking at buying some webspace and am a bit confused ( understatement) on whether to opt in for windows servers or linux servers? Which is best in terms of ?? or being able to use more scripts, etc., down the road?
Any help appreciated.
