is there a linux distro with a desktop that takes less than 8 mb of ram, i would think if there is it would use fluxbox or a basic window maker, but i dunno if there is one

Not sure about it, but you may want to check out DSL (http://damnsmalllinux.org/).
Hope this helps.
DSL is pretty memory-intensive. Most distros will do it, though. You'll save a lot of memory if you don't use X.

You could try Puppy (http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=1) or Run DSL or Fedora or Ubuntu from the live CD.
Live CD distros are memory-intensive, since they have to load everything into memory rather than using the hard drive. You'd be better with a normal distro. Gentoo can be optimised for memory usage, but it'll take a while to compile on a low-spec machine.
