i guess when you are worth 59 billion usd, you need to think of new ways of spending money. at least he does give 5 / 6 billion a year in philanthropy and humanitarian causes.

They may say it, but the truth at the core of that saying is that you cannot buy happiness. Money can be a part of the process, but isn't required at all. Happiness existed before there ever was money. If you have what you value, and your priorities, expectations, etc. are set right and appropriately for who you are, you're happy.

If you have $9000.00 and you think you need $10000.00, you are in deficit of $1000.00. If you have $9.00 and you think you need $10.00, you are only off by a dollar. In which situation do you think the person would be happier?

Well, numerically valid, but the thought is wrong as it means the items are equal-- the car for $10,000 may bring much more happiness than the lunch for $10... most likely.

Money really can't buy happiness-- it's true. It can make life easier, but the only reason that having something is good is because you didn't have it before. You're not really all that happy that you have air-- sure, it's needed and you'd be mighty unhappy without it, but it doesn't cause happiness. More than anything else, it's the most wonderful and needed thing-- having air should make us happy all the time. But once we have it, it no longer is all that special. Just like anything, even a really expensive new car, life has a weird way of working, where the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence-- has to do with boredom and hope, I suppose.

Reading that made me mighty happy I have air. I think some folks never take that for granted, and that many of those are far happier for it.

Becoming bored or jaded with accustomed things is a natural development, but not inevitable, and there are degrees. Those who can escape this, essentially a trap, or who get into it to a lesser degree, are generally much happier. It's just as natural to remain in wonder of even the simplest of joys. These are conflicting human tendencies.

Well, remember that happiness is relative, so my assertion must be true-- it's impossible to always be happy about having air because you'd never know that you are happy (unless, maybe, you were only comparing yourself to others).
In some sense, we are happier, as, if we did not have air, we'd be much less happy.
However, happy is like adding, and unhappy is like subtracting-- they work together to affect our mood and level of happiness, but not in the same way-- unhappiness is from unpleasant things that simply bring down our mood regardless of anything good, and happy things bring up our mood also regardless of anything bad. So air may be constantly bringing up our mood, but it's the other factors that really determine whether, in a comparative sense, we are happy.

Very analytical. Happiness is not necessarily about that though. Some folks are just happy, some are just sad. With people like that, the circumstances would have to be pretty extreme to greatly modify their mood. For others, even the slightest thing can send them off in one direction or another.

As I noted above in parentheses, that is a possible exception. But can that really count? 'I'm happier than you are.' 'No, I am.' -- Impossible to really tell.
Anyway, if someone really is happy about the fact that there is air to breath, I'd be willing to bet they had some near death experience, or something of the sort.

If I can't buy happiness, I guess I will have to rent it. :D

Actually, they did some studies, and they found something interesting. Money can buy happiness, but only up to the level of sustenance (i.e. if you don't have money to eat, and someone gives you money, you tend to be happier with the money than without.) But once you reach the level of sustenance, money has less and less of an effect on your happiness as you get more and more money.

On the other hand, since I know that happiness is something that comes from within, I figure I might as well be rich and happy, instead of just happy. ;)
