3) Describe problem: Grandad promised a nice effect on his web site! Very new to all this and cannot for the life of me get to grips with the 'thumbnail' aspect of this script! It all works via the text link but how do I replace the text hyperlink with a thumbnail of the larger image??

First, you'd want to have the thumbnail images - smaller versions of your larger images. These can be made in most image editing programs. Once you have those, it is really just straightforward HTML. Here is a trigger with a text link:
