There's free versions for both of those programs. And they do a pretty damn good job as well.

do not get anti virus programs that are free, they usually give you viruses or make you have popups , thats how they make money, also get zonealarm and nod32 then you will be unstoppable, never haver a virus efect my laptop!!

I've used both AVG and avast! They have no popups. Spyware Terminator, I'm not so sure on how good a job it does, but its not on a rogue ware list, it does access internet whenever starts up (for IE news insert) and automatic updates are on by default, turn them off and deny it access if you prefer, it seems to still function.

AVG is a very, very good free resident anti virus program. Are any of the above mentioned programs, or are any others as good, or nearly as good, as a resident anti malware program. Something like PCtools' (not free and too much overhead, in my opinion) Spyware Doctor?

Spybot has a resident protection feature.

As does the one I mentioned. I found its default settings annoying though, it had this little menu that would pop every so often with a list of EVERYTHING that had been changed. One time the list reached the top of the screen, decided to change the settings a bit...
