IE6 and IE7 on one desktop?

like the title says. Is there a way to have both IE6 and IE7 on a desktop for test purposes?

Yes and no. You cannot have an official install of both browsers. There are:

But, they have limitations. Some, if not all of these can supposedly be overcome by altering the registry and/or by other tricks.

I use the IE 6 one and have IE 7 officially installed. I have not used any of the tricks to tweak the IE 6 one. So, it doesn't do filters and sees itself as IE 7 for the purposes of conditional comments. Aside from that, it's pretty good as a test proxy for IE 6. For real important tests, I keep a copy of the real IE 6 on a separate machine.

It sounds like an ordinary clone will work just fine in most cases. I am hoping to be able to recreate a few bugs. My hope is that soon ie6 will become obsolete soon. Maybe Internet explorer will become obsolete too, but not very likely.

Filters, like alpha image loader, drop shadow, alpha opacity, that sort of thing. Here's something that might help with that:

But, I've never tried it, I want to keep my registry and dll's as Gates intended them. :)

my knowledge of coding is not so high as you might think ;) I would like to keep my registry as clean as I can as well. I used to get headaches trying to fix my registry from rather clever attacks that viruses would make.

One that I remember would close regedit as soon as it was opened so that in effect it was open for all of 1/100 of a second. Then there were rootkits or ones that had perpetually changing file names and so many others. But that is all in the past. I have taken precautions and now I can't remember the last time I had a registry problem :)

I don't really know what those filters are that you are talking about or what they do. The IE6 that I downloaded recreates bugs wonderfully though.

The most popular filter is perhaps the alpha(opacity=nn) filter for fading images. Also often used in its more formal syntax:

filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.alpha(opacity=10);

in style declarations. The fact that these filters don't work is no big deal, you can pretty much just use your imagination. However, when testing scripts that alter these filters on the fly, you will get erroneous errors in the IE 6 standalone.

The filters are used like style and can be scripted. They do not change IE 6 or any IE version that supports them. It is a definite limitation to the standalone version of IE 6 to lack support for them.
