Help with a pbbg

I'm new to php and mysql but I'm making a pbbg and need a little help and advice. Firstly whats the best way to do ingame mail and forums? I have an idea of how to go about it but not sure how u store a mass of text in a database. Any help or advice or pointing me in the right way would be great.
