HI,
how can i make my page so that other visitors cannot click the EDIT button above and edit the pages code. i knoe they cannot save and change the file but i would rather not have it up there.

The code you posted simply starts the document, establishing the document type, meaning which type of html you are using on the page. In this case, that is xhtml. (On a side note-- xhtml is pretty much worthless because Internet Explorer, for some stupid reason, doesn't recognize xhtml. Until it does, considering at least 50&#37; of web viewers are on IE, xhtml is more trouble than it's worth, whether or not it's better, in theory.)

The edit button, I assume, is the one that, by default, opens in Microsoft Word, from Internet Explorer.

There is no way to change things in the browser like that.

Secondly, people can save and change your code, but just on their computer, not on your server. Your website will not change, but they can take your source code and modify/save it if they would like.

This is just how many things work on the internet. It's a very open means of transmitting data. Pictures, source code and other data are very easy to steal, and there is really no way of stopping it. Of course copyright law protects you if it becomes a major issue, but there is no way to code your page so that they can't view the source code. It's simply how the web works-- user requests page; server sends page; browser renders page. So, if you don't send the code, they can't see anything, and if you do send it, they can view/save it.

Clearly IE is being used, since we're talking about the edit button.
As I said, xhtml is probably not the best option.

you have over compleicated things i think.
as in EDIT button i meant the button at the top which has either frontpage, notepad of whatever your web page editor is.
XHTML is fine, i have no problems with it on internet explorer or firefox etc.
I put that code up because i dont know what to edit!! thats why i posted on here.
You can save the changes to the server if you press the button above ^^ and save. if you have the password and username. i would rather make my pages more sdafe.

XHTML is fine, i have no problems with it on internet explorer or firefox etc. Then you're not using XHTML. You're probably serving it as text/html, in which case it is invalid HTML, not XHTML.

I only said XHTML becuase you said it was . . . . it is css with HTML.
It probabbly is only in internet explorer but the mahority of people use internet explorer

1. XHTML:
Yes, the majority of people use internet explorer. XHTML is not supported by internet explorer.
It will try to GUESS what you mean by the INVALID html (xhtml), but it will not be actually using xhtml. It will instead be using html that happens to have extra, potentially disruptive commands.

2. Saving to the server:
First, that button opens the file for editing in the default editor. When you click save, it saves the file locally, from a temporary location from which it was stored in the first place.
Second, yes, if they have your username and password, they can save to your site (though I'm not aware of a direct option from the edit button). Removing this edit button (impossible anyway) would not make anything more secure. If they can do that, they could just log onto your ftp.
As a test, give me your username and password and I promise not to use the edit button and I can delete your whole site in 2 minutes. (I'm joking, but... it is very possible.)

3. The code you placed above is just the first two lines of your page. There is nothing to edit because this is impossible, and since you're doing an overall setting for the page (theoretically), it wouldn't depend much on the rest of your page at all.

I use IE. Version 7. With Windows Vista. Haven't had a problem (except general crashes).
