I used to be on a swim team, so I've played with that a few times.
I just get insanely bored and tired after about 1:30, so I stop.
I have, though, been able to swim underwater (not coming up for air) back and forth in a 25 meter pool (standard size, not olympic size).
Pushing too hard is bad for brain cells, though.
It's tough underwater as well, in that you must concentrate on not floating up :p
the other thing to do is holding your breath while driving, which is easier to do and a bit safer. Just pick two marks and go between them.
I'm likely the only person on the board to be able to save I've done it across the golden gate bridge ;)
(Again, this is pretty stupid, really. //insert "don't try this at home" here)

Yeah, but if you pass out... :p
Oh, I should specify... this is while RIDING in a car, not actually when you are driving it. Heh.

When I was younger, my family went to the beach every weekend religiously during summer. We had access to a "club" beach, so I knew most of the families and kids there and often times we would have swimming contests and one of them was to jump off the diving board and see who can swim the furthest into shore. I made it to shore quite alot, however one time I got disoriented on direction and ended up swimming out of the beach boundaries and underneath the dock of the private home next door about 60yrds away. I would have kept going, but The guy was getting into his boat to go out somewhere.
I never did attempt that again though :/
