Too many files to backup

Hi from a brand new user,

I have reached a point with more than 300 files that I cannot backup my hard drive to a flash drive. The backup fails each time I reach more than 300 files backed up. My thoughts are that the directory is not large enough. HOW CAN I MAKE THE DIRECTORY LARGER ON A FLASH DRIVE.

Directories don't have a fixed size, at least on any filesystem I know of.

I'd suspect you've simply run out of space on the drive. It's also possible that you're using a really old filesystem that doesn't support more than three hundred files, but I think that unlikely.

directory? you only have so much physical space that can be stored in 1 area, and my guess is that you have reached the capacity on that drive. So either you get a second one (either larger so u can fit it all on / any new one so u can fit the remainder) or u prioritize what really needs to be backed up on the flash drive and what can be stored elsewhere

Hi,

I am trying to backup about 100mb's onto a 512mb flash drive. When I reach the 301st file I get an error message that the COPY has an error with that file. Which leads me to believe that there is a directory space problem. If I remove certain files before the 301st file, delete all the files on the flash drive and then try to copy the hard drive files back onto the flash drive I will get the error message again on the new 301st file. I even bought a new 1G flash drive and tried to load the hard drive files onto the new flash drive and I get the error message on the 301st file on that flash drive.

I have over 275 html and txt files on my folder plus a folder that holds the images used by the html files on my web site. If no one can debug this I may have to put the html files into their own folder and backup them seperatly.

You could just zip the whole folder into a single .zip file (or .rar, etc.) and backup that single file onto the drive.

This is a weird error, certainly.

Sometimes the directory can get messed up and have stored an incorrect filesize. Are you positive that there isn't more than 512mb in the directory and it's just not telling you correctly?

Is it flat or using directories? If all the stuff is in one folder, I'd recommend dividing them up into directories.
i think all file systems have limitations on how many files can be held in one preticular folder.

12 bit fatfs has a file limit per folder altho i am not sure how many files it is

I have had this problem before, just reformat your drive!
Should solve your problem!
