If you have Windows Vista, which version do you have and what do you think of it?

That doesn't sound so bad. Were using WinXp Pro for now but were hoping on getting a new computer soon and from what I understand all new computers come with windows Vista.

I guess the only question I'd ask you is, if Internet Explorer keeps on crashing what other browser are you using?

By the way, I think my wife is gonna be happy to hear that most of the software runs well in Vista. She doesn't want to upgrade because she heard some bad things about Vista.

Anyone else got something to add about Vista?
The good, the bad and the ugly? :)

the premium versions are supposed to come with VM software (i cant find it so i think bill is full of himself!)

currently (no patches) it is not very stable from what i observed (i used home basic and home pro)

i cant get many of my16bit apps or non-theme aware apps to run on it

even less command based programs work on it than on XP

but hey it takes less ram (but more CPU idling if you use the new window style)

but if i HAD to choose one i would get a premium version because it comes with stuff that basic dont (duh!)

EDIT: oh and if you use a low end video card be sure to get the LATEST drivers you can for it (alot of old drivers are incompatible)

It costs money.
major downside to vista.
if i wanted it, and i was employed, would take me ~50 hours to afford vista(not including the 14% tax), at 10$ an hour.

I'd rather have a 360. For some reason, whoever is in charge of the gaming dept. is doing things the opposite to the rest of MS. Doing it right.

It costs money.
All Windows products are overly priced...

Usually I use IE but sometimes Netscape. It only crashes when you try to download a file with multiple tabs open.

P.S. I hope Bill Gates isn't reading this thread...

You need to remember that Windows Vista Home Premium OEM only costs $80US.

I'm also thinking that it will be slower on the equivalent RAM used for XP. All the extreme graphics may slow it down. I think Vista is asthetics over performance, to be honest. I would prefer XP.

it is faster than XP ramwise (hard to beleive)
but it is more cpu intensive

All the extreme graphics may slow it down. That's what graphics cards are for :)
I think Vista is asthetics over performance, to be honest. They can be turned off, I think, if required.

Sure, but turn off the new graphics, and you're left with worse performance :D

Twey

Haha, possibly -- I haven't done any benchmarks, although reports do indicate that :) I'm just saying it's not really accurate to say that the performance is poor because of the graphics.

Right.

But the point here isn't that.

The point is that this is Microsoft's OSX clone, trying to pretend to be cool, with no real improvements (and likely some problems, such as soon-to-be-exploited security holes), with just a fancy interface that does nothing.
Turn that off, and you've just got XP with less testing.

As for OSX vs. Vista, Vista is a joke. Instead of the nice way that OSX allows you to view all the windows at once (F11, which just scales them down and tiles them), and other similar methods, Vista has implemented one of the dumbest features I've seen in a long time... the rolodex method of running through windows. Alt+tab (with XP anyway) does the same thing, doesn't look at stupid, and.... there's no need for the all-powerful rolodex that everyone at Microsoft is so excited about.

Windows Internet Explorer

LMAO @ their own browser not even working :))

I dont think that any Win$hit is good to buy before a service pack... I consider their initial release to be a beta release. not until SP1 that you will see a decent return on the OS power and functionality

Turn that off, and you've just got XP with less testing. And DRM, don't forget the lovely, pointless, CPU-burning DRM :p No, in fairness they've done some rather core work on it. I've looked at the API references, and they've neatened things up one heck of a lot. From a developer's point of view, it's a big improvement, even without the .NET layer.

I'm not claimin the OSX thing is particularly great (it's nice when you need it), but the Vista clone of is silly, and if you don't like the OSX version, then you surely shouldn't like the vista version.

Im just going to interject with this statement...

Everything vista has can be done with XP.
Everything aero does can be had with any linux, for free, with less overhead.

EDIT: yay, post 500!

Hi friends,Iím a very satisfied user of Microsoft Vista and Iím using Ultimate edition. I heard this scream before from many people that Vista is a sad OS and its the worst from Microsoft. I just thought of having a try, installed Vista ultimate and Iím using it for almost 10 months now.First of all, Iím very much satisfied with Vista because its very very easy to use and a very friendly operating system.

I used to have Windows Vista Home SP1... It sucked. ;)

RAM is one issue - I have 1.6 gigs, a fair amount, but Vista took up 75% of it... Just to load the taskbar!

Compare it to Linux - Linux is faster, more customizable and can support a billion different file types than Windows, it's FREE and has a thousand better FREE programs. And doesn't crash your programs, and I could go on forever about why Linux is better.

Vista used to crash my programs when they were working fine! I couldn't understand it. Oh, and the Windows programs would crash, but Windows wouldn't try to close them like it did with Firefox - no, it wouldn't even say Not Responding in the titlebar, it would just sit there and I'd have to open up task manager and end the process. I had become quite skilled at ending processes while having Windows! ;)

And they couldn't even make the edges look nice on the Window Decoration! They're all choppy and ugly looking - I could've done a better job!

Bottom line - Vista may look good (somewhat), may work well for a couple months, but then it gets bogged down and crashes and all sorts of stuff happen. I had Vista - I know what happens. Plus it costs around 500 bucks (for an edition that at least half works)

Linux and MAC are at least 100% better than Vista.

If only people would realize that Windows is NOT you're only choice and people started using Linux and MAC more...

(All in my opinion)

Very true, main reason I still have Vista is because of program capability, since Linux and Mac aren't as great at this. Companies develop programs for windows in many cases, like games, which is a main factor for me, so Linux wouldn't really work in that sense.

.. main reason I still have Vista is because of program capability ...

That was my only problem with wiping Vista as well...

At least Wine (http://www.winehq.org/) will open most programs. And IEs4Linux (www.tatanka.com.br/) also helps.

The only reason I had Windows was for IE testing. But 'cuz of IEs4Linux, I can test it all on Linux... I also love this sentence on the IEs4Linux site:

Please, donít use any of these IEs to navigate!! Get Firefox.
