Can any kind soul help someone completely new to CSS.
I am using serif web 9 which gives the user the choice of inserting code in head or body. No problem with html or javascriopt but where do I put the css code and if there is html code as well do they go together?
Apologies if this sounds stupid but, as I say I am trying to learn.

You could place CSS code in the HTML, between the head tags. Take a look at the following example.

<html>
<head>

<style>
/* CSS HERE */
</style>

</head>

Hope this helps.

Yes, css generally goes in or linked to the head of the page and in fact, unless it is inline style in the HTML tag that it applies to, technically it can only go in the head but, most browsers will allow it in the body section.
