I'll start. But where is it?

I have a few, with different themes and effects:

The ripples look kind of ugly when still. They're much nicer in motion.

/EDIT: Oh, now I see it. ImageShack isn't working for me, though -- a response is never sent to my request.

Ahh a non icon man I see... I will get my screen captures and upload them in a while, making dinner now :)

I like icons, shortcuts, folders, labels. I hate going to the start menu then all programs, etc.

This is on my Windows machine, of course. I only use certain apps and of course the games. On my Linux box I have 2 icons and the rest are in drawers on my tool bars, LMAO

Screen Capture 1 (http://cleverwasteoftime.com/blizzcorner/winscreen.jpg)

Apps and Proggies on the left, games and site items on the right. heh. chaotic organization. I like folders :D

Will get my 2 laptops and my Fedora Core screen up next time I log into them.

Edit.. wow that was huge! is there a height/width setting for posted images here? I don't want to take up the whole damn page.

shachi, quite nice (for GNOME :p). The one thing I miss in other environments is GNOME's ability to resize icons. I'd probably just end up with one big icon (all I have on my desktop at the moment is my [rather large] TODO list) but it'd be nice anyway. :)

I am not very good at "beautifying" desktops, The only change I made was to the top bar and the desktop. I almost never use GNOME(as long as I have openbox, and if my friends see my desktop, they say "Gee! Is that a desktop??")

Heh, thanks. The windows one I took a screen of the install I did a while back and added the text to it later.

And yes I know about the giant gnome print, I like the gnome environment a little better than KDE, and this is my work computer after all, so I went with a default background pic, as I haven't yet had time to browse the art sections and find a nicer one. In real life though it isn't as noticeable and looks pretty good. :D

So, honestly, Gnome, KDE.. is there really anything one can do that the other can't? I haven't found anything yet. But then again most of my programing is spent on WinXP cause of Flash...

Twey

Shouldn't it be:
<throat:clear>you nutter</throat>No, throat is the namespace and clear the actual tagname. :p Note that the syntax is XML, not HTML.
So, honestly, Gnome, KDE.. is there really anything one can do that the other can't?Rather a lot. For a start, GNOME is considerably less customisable than KDE. I believe this was a conscious attempt to simplify the desktop environment by the GNOME developers, but I don't like it anyway. GNOME also just includes a lot less features (composite support, window-specific settings, Mac-like application menu...). Another thing I hate is the file dialogue: there's no direct input box, so in order to find, for example, a helper application for Firefox, one has to navigate to /usr/bin then wait whilst it scans all the files there, freezing up the application completely, then scroll all the way down the list (2025 files on my machine) to find the correct one. Also, while it has less features and certainly has better performance than KDE, the performance increase isn't great enough to warrant calling it a light-weight desktop like Fluxbox or even XFCE, making it really rather useless.

mburt
01-21-2007, 03:55 PM
Yes, GNOME is much less accessible for an user which is unfamiliar with it. Which is the reason most people get Windows, or a Mac.

BLiZZaRD
01-21-2007, 04:08 PM
Less customizable? Really? I am really not a "defender" of Gnome over KDE, just curious. I really don't get into the whole customizing thing to the extremes that I have heard of, but I have changed a lot on the Gnome desktop.

There hasn't been anything I tried to change that I couldn't, and the "Linux for non-geeks" book I got went through 3 whole chapters of customizing the Gnome environment, and there was nary a thing left untouched. What can you customize on KDE that you can't on Gnome?

As for the features, are you positive that is not your distro? I am not arguing, cause I really don't know, but during my set up of Fedora I got to choose what got installed and what didn't, for both KDE and Gnome, and Gnome had a lot more options. Now, granted the KDE defaulted to having more options installed than Gnome, but I checked all the boxes for both.

Besides, it was my understanding that I could use any KDE application within Gnome, and vise versa. Also, for the direct file input box, maybe I miss understood you, but I did just that the other day to find my works network folder on the LAN.

Went to "Places" Find Folder and typed in the name of the network folder and the folder within the network folder (in this case /TGAADMIN/TGABlack/Agent Folders/ ) and it came up as found, and I made a short cut to it in the "Places" menu.

Twey

Yes, GNOME is much less accessible for an user which is unfamiliar with it.I disagree: the whole point behind making GNOME "simpler" was to make it easier for new users.
we're focused on making Free Software appropriate for users who are smart (we don't talk about 'dumb users'), but just don't care about computing technology.
There hasn't been anything I tried to change that I couldn't, and the "Linux for non-geeks" book I got went through 3 whole chapters of customizing the Gnome environment, and there was nary a thing left untouched. What can you customize on KDE that you can't on Gnome?I can't give a full list since I don't have GNOME installed on here at the moment, but I recall there being quite a lot. This was a couple of months ago, though; I suppose it might have changed, but as far as I know GNOME still has no built-in composite support. That's what I remember most since it's the reason I switched back to KDE :p
As for the features, are you positive that is not your distro? I am not arguing, cause I really don't know, but during my set up of Fedora I got to choose what got installed and what didn't, for both KDE and Gnome, and Gnome had a lot more options. Now, granted the KDE defaulted to having more options installed than Gnome, but I checked all the boxes for both.I was talking about the actual environments themselves, not applications designed for them.
Besides, it was my understanding that I could use any KDE application within Gnome, and vise versa. Also, for the direct file input box, maybe I miss understood you, but I did just that the other day to find my works network folder on the LAN.

Go to Firefox and click File->Open Location... to see what I mean. Then try to navigate to a file in /usr/bin.

/EDIT: On my distribution, this has actually been fixed now (there's a Location textbox), but I'm running unstable, so you may still be able to see it. The auto-complete on the textbox is still rather slow (typing in /usr/bin causes Firefox to freeze for about half a minute on mine) but it's nothing like the old one, which took in excess of ten minutes at one point, although I did have other applications running at the same time.

Well, if you look at the scale- the room is 17 square meters (180 square feet).

Wow man...

Well, I generally use 2-3 machines max at the same time, one is always on- and I use it to host the amplifier. The second "always on" is the PC (sits on the floor, with door opened). It is the noisiest thing there: 2 CPUs, 5 fans- gonna switch to Core Duo soon enough though. It's followed by B132L (left, under the CRT), and C3600 (the gray-blue, with LCD) with its two huge 5 inch fans, which don't run full speed though, but enough to give away (http://ftp.id.uw.edu.pl/pub/video/Allegro-startup.avi)its presence (it's still an a**-kicking machine). And there's one electronic KVM, hidden- it has some problems though so I use it with Suns and HPs only, because SGI Indy (the aquamarine thingy) sync's on green.

You wont get rid of any components but you can use one keyboard and mouse for all your monitors. :D

I like the last lily on the page. We have one of the world's premiere botanical gardens nearby us here in SE PA. Longwood Gardens - they have wonderful water lily features (seasonably) in the outdoor portion of their extensive conservatory. Something about these plants always resonated with me and bring on a calming mood.

Fedora Core all the way :D

However, get version 5, not 6. 6 has a few bugs that you have to work out/around during initial install and the overall new features aren't worth the headache.

version 7 is nearing final release, but for now use FC5, so far it is the best version yet.

Yes you can still get 5. Go to fedoraproject.org, click on the get fedora and follow the links to the i386 (or x86_64 if running a 64 bit system) and in the URL you will see ...../1386/6/iso.... whatever.. change folder "6" to "5" and the iso's are still there :D (all the way back to 2 I believe, but stick with 5)

That and the install loaded the i586 kernel instead of the i686 kernel so during install you had to specify "linux i686". Not a big deal really unless you didn't know.

Also depending on some of the packages it would install the xen kernel instead of the normal one, made loading xwin impossible as well as most other GUI aspects.

Once it was loaded and updated 6 was/is fine it's just a lot of hassle, especially for a new person.

Try desktop cleanup wizard. :)

That's a windows only thing, I think. Anyways, when installing new programs I usually do not select or deselect (if it is selected) the option of having a desktop icon added. I also routinely delete any desktop shortcuts I don't think I need. I can easily do this because I am quite familiar with how to make new ones if I want them and with finding programs on my computer that have no icons on the desktop or in the start menu.

i usually use ACA Capture Pro (http://www.acasystems.com/en/screencapturepro/) ,here is my shot (http://boinc.mundayweb.com/desktop/konfabulator_small.jpg)

Why did you PAY for a screen capture program?
it comes with the OS, you just hit the "print screen" button then paste it into an imp...

It's one of those things where I'm always thinking I'll need something later on down the road. Bad habit i know. lol.

Twey
03-13-2007, 07:23 PM
There are issues with the standard Windows screen-capture utility... it doesn't display OpenGL- or ActiveX-rendered widgets, and it does odd things to scrollbars. It's a lot less flexible than a dedicated program, too (although, as you said, an image editor removes a lot of this, it's an extra step).

I use KSnapshot for this reason, even though KDE provides built-in screencapture functionality. KSnapshot does most of the things that program claims to do (but it's free :)).
wow, all of you guys have such few icons on your desktops!! I have about a million folders and application icons on mine. Seriously, about 3/4 of my desktop is covered with icons. The only icons I have on my desktop are my (rather bulky) TODO list, and my CD drive, which KDE puts there automatically, and which I can't be bothered to remove, even though I rarely use it. KDE provides a list of commonly-used applications at the top of the main menu, which happen to be my web browser, mail client, chat client, media player, and terminal, the only applications I use regularly (read: fire up at boot). I find this faster and neater than minimising all my applications, clicking an icon, and restoring them all. If I need something else, I tend to hit alt-f2 and type its name (which tends to be faster than clicking anyway).
As I think BLiZZaRD mentioned, Linux desktops also have the concept of "drawers," a single panel icon (as seen in the quick-launch bar in Windows) each of which can store a large number of further icons, rendering desktop icons redundant for a lot of users.

if it was remote then it would show my public IP, (24.57.242.226) right?

Twey
03-29-2007, 06:58 AM
Yeah, but it would be plausible that there would be another machine on the server's LAN that just happened to have the same IP as your router. As it is, I'm not sure. I'd start getting paranoid about now. :p

lainlives

it is very possible for the the servers lan to have a computer with the same ip as u because my ip address has 3 in the same city...

Twey
03-30-2007, 04:44 PM
Yes, except that it's on the same LAN, so it can't be.
boxxertrumps, if I were you I'd make sure someone hasn't compromised your router... check network logs for any other connections made by that router, upgrade the firmware, flash the settings and change the password. It could also be someone spoofing their IP, especially if your network is wireless.

Do you have the query string sent by the "router?"

boxxertrumps
03-30-2007, 05:47 PM
I dont know how to begin doing what you just told me too...
its not wireless, and its understandable that its been comprimised because i havent changed the password. Or default UN.
Sooo...
I have some things to do...

EDIT: why do you have router in quotes?
But i only have the IP and timestamp of its acsess...

Twey
03-30-2007, 06:24 PM
I dont know how to begin doing what you just told me too...Disconnect the router from the internet, then look for the reset button on it. That'll take care of any surprises the attacker may have left. After hitting that, log in and set it up (change the username and password this time!), then browse to the manufacturer's site and download the latest firmware for it. There'll be a config page on the router somewhere where you can upload a new firmware version. Do a thorough virus scan on your machines, too, and check that there's nothing unusual left behind and no ports left open: if there are it's likely the attacker has compromised one. It's possible that more sophisticated measures could have been used -- if you want to be completely certain, you'd have to reformat them all -- but I think it unlikely.
its not wireless, and its understandable that its been comprimised because i havent changed the password. Or default UN.Oh dear.
EDIT: why do you have router in quotes?Because if it were a wireless network, it would be possible to connect and send a request to the web server that looked as though it came from the router, which is one possible way of avoiding suspicion.

Twey
04-16-2007, 07:09 PM
I'm glad that avast is available for linux. It's really only of help for scanning Windows files, say on a fileserver. Most professional Linux anti-virus suites (such as ClamAV) are based around the assumption that you'll be doing that.

boxxertrumps
04-17-2007, 12:58 PM
So.. There's no linux specific antivirus? i mean, there's really no point unless i login as root, i rarely do that, but when i do...

Twey
04-17-2007, 05:25 PM
Not really, no. Avast, ClamAV, BitDefender, and others offer a Linux anti-virus solution, but there are so few Linux vira (something like forty-five vs. several hundred thousand, if I remember correctly, and none of the forty-five still in the wild), that their features are based around the assumption that you'll be handling files from Windows users. You can still use most of them to check for Linux vira, of course, but it's not really worth it. Rather, you should secure your machine from other attacks, by keeping yourself up to date with patches, and scanning regularly with an automated vulnerability detector like Nessus.

And the article here (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/10/06/linux_vs_windows_viruses/) (written in 2003) lists it as 40:60,000. As you can see, reports vary wildly, but all of them agree on one thing: there are one heck of a lot more Windows vira, and none of the current Linux ones are dangerous any more.
Well I'm sure "everyone" knows this but you can edit virtually any info there...

This could get seriously serious in some cases...Not really, for the same reason it's not a serious problem that a vandal can rewrite public physical bulletin boards: people will see it, put it right, and penalise the vandal.

I'd rather have the public opinion instead of a select few publishing a book.
If anyone can edit it, then the article will fall onto the most widely accepted position of everyone who reads it.
With a closed article, only a few people's opinions will be heard, with a greater chance of it being biased.

Well, SGI was heavily involved in its development, in fact, there was a complete N64 daughterboard for Indy as development platform.

Technically, neither is better, N64 was aimed at games, so it has built in texturing and filtering- Indigo2 was aimed ad CAD, so there's no hardware texturing, but pixel fill rate is 12 times faster (polygon fill 10, or 2- depending on N64 mode), thanks to 8 geometry engines and 2 raster engines...

I'm using a randomly generated image from the PHP GD library, since I've been playing with that. Take a look here-- (and refresh to see the variations):

I'm assuming since this is screenshot stuff, that is "wallpaper"? If that is in fact your wall paper, based on the appearance I would expect to the left of said wall paper there are a ton of beads you have to walk through to gain entrance to the kitchen? Be careful not to walk over the lava lamp as you head into the kitchen to relieve the munchies...

Hahaha. Yeah, it's a bit overwhelming. But I'm using a wider render, so it's not quite so chaotic.

And my desktop is such a mess in the first place that it's all but unusable. I should clean it up at some point.

what i did was i took vistas explorer.exe and opened it in a hex editor and for all teh dll files it needs i renamed them to .dl1 and put the neccisary vista dll's as dl1's in my system folder did the same for uxtheme.dll it ran ok anyway but crashed often so i changed back

i was using the windows blinds version of that untill my trial ran out so i got the vista version and tried to get it to work in xp

I am most definitely using Windows Vista. As for where you can get the Windows XP theme, I am not sure. Ask Nile (http://www.dynamicdrive.com/forums/member.php?u=26676). He was the one who suggested it to me.

Yes, one of the big annoyances for me on both *nix and Windows is the absence of a panel that can render text vertically. It should be fairly easy to render text each letter below the last, but for some reason it's never been implemented. This would be especially handy since there are some languages that are actually written this way — I've really always preferred my panels on the right-hand side, as I think is featured in one of my Konqueror screenshots up there somewhere *waves vaguely up the thread* where I used an icons-only view. I think this is mostly caused by a lack of support for vertical text at a toolkit level. A lot of browsers still lack support for the tb-lr and tb-rl text directions of CSS, too.

That's an awful lot of icons you've got there. How do you ever find anything? :) Your systray looks like you're running just about every app known to man, too. Have you been noticing slowdowns recently? :p

Nice background though. Very scenic.

jscheuer1
03-25-2009, 03:08 PM
A lot of what is in the systray is disabled. I chose an option that shows disabled items (some of these have slashes through them, others are simply off), so that they may be easily activated when needed. Some of it is also the odd habit of Opera and EditPad to appear in the systray even though they are just ordinary applications.

What's actually running there are - volume control (hardly worth mentioning), the ATi monitor application, virtual sound, power/battery monitor, printer, CD/DVD silencer, AVG Anti-Virus, and SpyBot.

Oh, and I happen to have TaskManager running there too in that shot because I've been testing a new script visa vis memory leaks in IE. Usually that one's not there.

I do tend to allow a lot of application icons pile up on the desktop. I'm so used to it, it actually helps me find things. However, the most frequently used items (image and text editors, browsers, calculator and my one game I like - wintris), are in the start menu at the top level.

The image is from Cadillac Mountain, Mount Dessert Island, ME, snapped by yours truly during sunset.

Some of it is also the odd habit of Opera and EditPad to appear in the systray even though they are just ordinary applications.Big applications nowadays often preload themselves — that is, store themselves in memory and perform initialisation so that they load much faster when you want them. That means that they're taking up about as much memory as if they were actually running.

@ Twey,

I've decided it was time to do a bit of pruning, got rid of some icons. However, Opera and EditPad, they are strange. The do not appear in the tray until launched - it's a weird thing. My understanding is that they just go there after launch to be available from more than one location. If closed, they disappear from the tray. Most of the other tray apps I either want or have also now gotten rid of.

@Twey:
One mixer is for the "Master Volume" and another directly controls my speakers. I use headphones now and then for audio stuff and it helps to have two...

And I blurred the drive name because it had my initials in it... Didn't want to give out my "personal information"!

Twey
03-27-2009, 09:46 AM
I'm sure nobody's going to track you down with just your initials :p But OK.

I see — I usually just set all my other devices to maximum and then controll the whole using the master. You can double-click the mixer to get a full mixer application with all your channels, you know.

Nile

The speech thing is hideos, I just like it to say things out loud. Its fun when you want to annoy somebody. And the doc is installed, I use RocketDoc. (Its on autohide, that way I dont have to look at it). Anyways, I don't have a problem with windows...

I've changed it around a little, and figured it'd be more space-saving if I did this:
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/5530/desktop2p.th.png (http://img511.imageshack.us/my.php?image=desktop2p.png)
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/5503/desktop1c.th.png (http://img511.imageshack.us/my.php?image=desktop1c.png)
