Thought this was a pretty cool movie. Obviously it has nothing to do with web development but what the heck, I am after all posting it in the lounge area. I realize that most of you have already seen it but hey, if you want to see it again go for it.

It's ok to talk about non web development topics here in the lounge. However, I know you're just linking to those movie clips, but somehow I doubt the person who posted them have permission to do so by the Studios. It would definitely be a copyright violation.

I was thinking about that and the fact that Brad Pitt was, at least at the time, perhaps the bigger 'name'. Then I was thinking, "Brad Pitt, I like him, he's a pretty good actor." Then I tried to remember other things I had liked him in. Seems the only roles I could recall, he was some sort of imaginary character, like 'Death', or a vampire, or in this case, Norton's alter ego. Wasn't Pitt in one or both of the more recent Ocean's movies? I think he does better as a supernatural/imaginary character for some reason. Maybe it is because he is a throwback to the old style 'Hollywood Star' - an actor known more for being larger than life than for being a particularly good actor.

I disagree. I think Brad Pitt is a great actor. I realize his looks and appeal made him the "larger than life" star that he is, just fueled by the Jen Aniston marriage.

But go back to his first movie (Across the Tracks and Thelma and Louise - 1991) He stole the show. 12 Monkeys? Genius. Yes he was in both Ocean's Eleven and Ocean's Twelve, and will be in 13 as well.

Every roll he takes he envelopes the character, Se7en, for example, Death, and on and on. Watch his early 21 Jump Street epesodes to see further proof of his abilities. Not to mention his production credits and other projects.

For a serious side watch Meet Joe Black or look for his new ones comming out in the next couple years: Dirty Tricks and State of Play.

In fact, I normally don't jump on actors like this and I can think of only one other such actor deserving of such accolaides, that being Johnny Depp.

I see your point and it tends to confirm my suspicions. Death is a role I already mentioned. All the characters in 'Monkeys' were imaginary, Pitt's definitely larger than life. His 'Se7en' character is somewhat along the same lines. These are larger than life roles for a larger than life STAR. I am unfamiliar with the other roles you mentioned except for the Ocean's 11 and 12. There he needed to act more within a 'normal' type character but, all of Billy (I think it was) Ocean's teams were selected for their members exceptional talent(s) in the required areas, they are a sort of 'superheros of crime' - larger than life.

And, I'm not really complaining. I sort of miss the old school type of Hollywood STAR sometimes. He's better at being Brad Pitt than I would be.

Just by contrast - in my view, Ed Norton's role in 'Fight Club' was that of some ordinary guy (problems at work, with his love life, feels alienated to begin with) who just happens to be losing his marbles. He nailed it, just as Pitt nails these more Hollywood STAR type roles, roles of imaginary, larger than life dimensions, few complications. This is probably why Pitt is cast so often in this type of role - the casting directors know what they are going to get.

Fight club is a very actual movie, because he reflects the main modern problem i think. The Man is no more The Man, but some kind of....

The movie is fairly real yes, and your English is good enough. The fact remains that Pitt's character is a figment of Norton's character's imagination, not a real person.

I really liked the movie and like Brad Pitt so, there isn't too much argument here. It is just a matter of, "What type of actor is Pitt?" Is he a character/method actor or a STAR type personality. If he is a character/method actor, you don't notice him in his roles, just his characters. If he is a STAR personality, its always him, just playing at being a character.

It's possible to have both talents but, one or the other is usually foremost in a given actor or actress.

I do agree with you John, and I can see how you come to that conclusion. Yes Pitt (and Depp, and to a point Robin Williams - see Insomnia and One Hour Photo) become thier characters.

It was once reported that Johnny Depp actually stays in character through out the shoot, even off set.

it's that kind of dedication that makes thier movies worth watching. I like very few actors, but I absolutley adore many characters. As a screen writer I have a certain connection with my characters, and it is my hope that if/when my movies are made into film I can achive the same type of roles. Ones where the audience wont say hey that is "so-and-so" but instead actually begin to see the character for the actor, not vise-versa.
