I really like this clean look and design the guys over at
http://www.revision3.com/ are using. Are they using some sort of CMS that they designed in house or is this a piece of software I can purchase?

No clue.

They could likely be just using their own code.

Design works well.

If I had to guess, I would say the CMS is in-house. However, the layout of the site should be independdant of the back end. Find yourself a good designer. Any CMS should do.

if you are dealing with a number of sites CMS will do a lot good but if you are dealing with a single site i don't know whether a CMS based site will give you much advantage

CMS means content management system. Frequently, this uses a php based admin page to control the content of pages, storying them in a database.
Something like a forum for a single admin, to "post" pages, content, etc.

A content management system offers more features over the conventional web development. If you are working in a virtual web of employees who is from around the world, it is really very difficult to maintain/carry out tasks especially related to web development. If you have a CMS the best part is a single entity can control the web maintenance or web development as most of the CMSs offers page publishing feature that means if you develop a page it won't become the part of the site but it will be kept in the site until the web administrator feels that the page is ok and they can publish it. Once you publish the page it will become the part of the site.

Another good feature is with little effort users can maintain a bunch of web sites, which is very difficult in conventional web development.

Another feature is most of the CMSs offers efficient site backup features using which even a person without much experience can take the backup of the site to avoid any problems.

From the developer point of view most the CMS offers most the necessary feature that we need to incorporate in a site. So that we can reduce the development time of the site tremedously.

I've been using SiteSage which is an ASP based CMS and worked on Joomla, which is a popular PHP based one.

we have been using modx for a while and thats probally the bets for customising and ease of use, may take a while to get used to, but you can splice any design into it easily, check ours in sig
