okay, #1, dont double post. all forums are annoyed by this.
and to answer your question, do these things...

Input all user names that you need
input their passwords into the opposite box
copy the passwords&user names into a text file on your desktop/My Documents folder

after that is done, choose the folder/files you want protected and input thier names, and make sure the directory to the .htpasswd file is /pass/. click submit
next unzip this (http://www.freewebs.com/boxxersgames/Htpasswd.zip)
into the protected directory, and read instructions.txt and your done.

ps. .htaccess files are annoying to make b/c windows says it has to have a file name.

DOS, however, doesn't mind, so I recommend doing it via DOS.

I have tried the instruction at http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/password/ many ways and can't make it work for me. I don't under stand what this means:" ".htpasswd" is a text file that is used to contain your usernames and encrypted passwords. Enter the path you will be placing your .htpasswd file (which contains the usernames/passwords) on the server. It should be a non user accessible location, such as directly above your public HTML folder. This is to prevent visitors from directly viewing this file in their web browser."
When I Ftp using Fetch I see the top directory and if I place file in it at sjsvdp.com it displays if I go to http://sjsvdp.com/file.txt or file.html.

It said I shouldn't put the .htpasswd file under sjsvdp.com. But where do I put it? I don't get higher level than this.

It means that your access to your server is only within a "chroot gaol:" you're not allowed to access any files outside your web root.

It's usually safe to put it below the web root: Apache blocks access to it. Test this before relying on it, though, since configurations differ.
