it would definitely lower response times to simple questions such as "there is an error on this line and i cant figure out whats wrong..." or people could post links to thier site for suggestions. an IRC running off one of the site's servers wouldnt take up much RAM or bandwidth... so i think this would be a good idea.

Mehhhh I thought it was Internet Relay Chat
On Freenode there are a few web development channels (#css, ##javascript, #html, #xhtml). People occasionally ask questions about DD scripts there.

The best way to attract the wrong crowd is by setting up a IRC channel I've heard. Plus on a forum, what you say is perserved for the benefit of others, but not in a chat room.
The best way to attract the wrong crowd is by setting up a IRC channel I've heard. That depends where it's set up :) Some networks (cough EFnet) have a rather poor reputation, but most people on Freenode (probably roughly the same percentage as seen on this forum, or a little better) are sensible. The transience of information is commonly solved by keeping logs from the channel and storing them in a public place.
