Hey,

Anyone would like to set up a web server for me? I'd pay you $200 AUD.

Any Aussies?

Thanks,

Peter

This doesn't seem to be a case of "advertisements/ self promotion/ spam". I don't think tech_support here is doing any of this.

Like a testing web server or one that will be available to the internet? On what platform? What web server?

Windows XP Professional/Linux using Apache 2.2
Avaliable in the internet
Dedicated Web Server

- Must be cheap to maintain :)

A web server exposed to the internet needs to be maintanied by someone who knows what they are doing. Even if you did get someone to set it up correctly, it would need updated, problems would arise. Overall, I think you are better off finding a hosting company to maintain a server for you.

Yeah, but I need a lot of disk space, and bandwidth

... for the endless users I'm going to have and how much disk space they're going to use

Yeah, but I need a lot of disk space, and bandwidthThen you don't want to host it from your home connection, which likely has neither :) Internet Runner (http://www.internetrunner.com/hosting-packages.htm) are decent.

I'm not in the UK :)

And I'm using my school connection so it's very fast.

Twey

How fast? Especially upstream? Most ISPs only provide something like 1/8th as much upstream speed as they do downstream.

Well, I haven't really checked but I suppose government ones will be really fast.

Also just checked that Internet Runner is internationally accepted.

Ooh, that's nice.

Well, you can start by installing Apache. The default settings are pretty secure (now).

Can I trade you internet connections? You still need to check whether your ISP allows you to run a web server.

And why else would they provide 7723kb/s upstream? :p

I've a "10Mb/s" connection, but I only get something like 512Kb/s upstream.

If you've installed Apache, it's pretty much done :) Just start it up and put your files in the public_html directory (location varies with distribution).

Not really, I'm having trouble making it public. All I can access it from is internally (my network), not externally.

Ah -- is the machine behind a router or firewall of some kind? You'll have to forward port 80.

tech_support

Yes it is, and I set up the router to forward port 80 already. But it's still not working :(

Do you have a static IP address. Also, how are you testing if it is publicly available?

tech_support

Yes I do have a static IP address, I don't know what you mean by testing it publicly. Like www.whatismyip.com ?
