Whats good to use for scripting

I am going to be remaking my schools web page again. I was wondering if there was any specific elements that I should include in the site. I am probably going to use css for alot of it but I would like to know what others like to use. I am going for something nice, clean, and works well in all browsers. Any suggestions for other languages to use?

um,HTML. Besides that it depends a lot on what the server supports.

Use a server-side language to keep design, content and logic separate.

Other than that, it depends entirely on what you want to do with the site.
