Any thoughts on generating freelance web design business??
What approaches have been successful for you?
Have you maintained the relationship in order to generate future revenue? How?
How did you initially contact the client?
Just thought it might be an interesting topic to discuss.

Dear ryand
Yes! There is a shortage of good web-templates in both CSS and Flash on the www. Get a portfolio of work together and I am sure you will be in business in no time.:D

Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.

Really?? Just come up with good designs and people will find you?? That doesn't seem very realistic.
It seems to me to generate business, you need to go get that business. To just sit and wait doesn't seem like it would allow a designer to get much business.
Case in point - I checked out some of the 'designer for hire' sites and most jobs are bid down to $20 - $50 for PHP / MySQL based designs. Makes me wonder about finding business online. The consulting business I have captured from actual companies I have contacted face-to-face have generated much more lucrative deals.
Any other thoughts??
When I need business, I tend to advertise in the Friday Ad.
Mind you, I'm no big professional designer. :)

Get something you can show people, then show them... however you can. Place an add somewhere, show people in person... whatever.
