the w3schools thing is kinda nice, but it really annoys me. Nothing is valid.

Seriously, here's a challenge... find a valid site... :)

And we can discuss the validity/importance of what it notices.

Ha, alright, but my point stands.

How realistic are it's expectations?

They're perfectly realistic. It's not hard to get a site to validate, if that site was designed well in the first place.

the w3schools thing is kinda nice [...]Err, what w3schools thing? The w3schools.com site doesn't feature a validation service.

Ummm... they're affiliated with one, yes?

Ummm... they're affiliated with one, yes?No. You're referring to the validator maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The W3C and w3schools are in no way related beyond having 'w3' in the domain name.

Many people confuse the two, to the point that some think w3schools is a tutorial site set up by the W3C. It's quite annoying, really. The former is a private concern operated by a commercial company, whereas the latter is a not-for-profit international organisation.
