How do you submit your web site to search engines? Do you manually do it, or do you use software. Also, what kind of tips could you give us to get higher ranking?

I just submit manually to www.google.com and voila!
But I can’t help but wonder if there is something else I could be doing to get more visitors.

Anyone got anything to share?

They find you.

there are packages you can buy that claim to bump your ratings, but they are almost entirely bogus, at least for google.

Their bots look around by following links.... so the more links and more hits your site gets, the more it'll be shown.

It takes a while... relax... and sit back. It takes about a year to get decent indexing, from what I've seen. On google, anyway.

I think the only worth while directories you need to manually submit your site to these days are local directories specific to the topic of your site. For scripts for example, that would be Hotscripts.com, CGI-resources.com etc. Search engines wise, like djr33 said, basically just submit to the handful of major search enignes yourself (ie: Google), and then focus on building up your site. I wouldn't use those search engine submission services that charge an arm and don't accomplish much in most cases anyway.
